Meet Rose:
Originally from southern Manitoba, Rose moved to Calgary 55 years ago and began planning her future here. As a self-proclaimed aging advocate passionate about senior housing solutions, Rose believes in the importance of planning for the future and aging in the right place.
Says Rose, “It’s like the Wayne Gretzky quote, ‘Skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.’ Think about where your life is going and make the choices that best suit you. That’s what University District is for me. University District ticked all my boxes, like accessibility, transport, retail and I thought, ‘Why wouldn’t I stay?’”

On top of being an aging advocate, Rose is passionate about enjoying the outdoors. Adds Rose, “University District is great for walking and it makes it so easy to walk in all weather conditions. It gives me great peace of mind that as the future progresses, I can easily live without a car here.” Rose loves the walkability of U/D so much that one of her favourite things to do is take her friends and family on walking tours of the community. On these tours, she often visits her favourite University District retailers on foot, including Save-on-Foods, Market Wines and Borough Bar + Grill.
Among her favourite spots in the neighbourhood, Central Commons Park holds a special place in her heart, particularly during the winter months. The twinkling lights, the laughter of families and the sight of people of all ages enjoying the skating rink create a magical atmosphere that warms her soul. Rose also appreciates the cozy spots in the park where she can warm up on chilly days, making Central Commons Park not just a place of beauty but a cherished gathering spot for the community.
As a retired nurse and resident of Maple, Rose finds comfort in knowing that Cambridge Manor by The Brenda Strafford Foundation (BSF) are close by to make any future transitions into assisted living seamless. In Rose’s view, life continues to progress and University District is the ideal community for aging gracefully and actively.
What is Rose’s favourite memory in this community? Waking up after her first night in University District and thinking, “This must be home.”

Meet Elisabeth:
In 2020, Elisabeth and her husband Noel embarked on a new adventure at Cambridge Manor. Now, three years later, they describe University District as the perfect blend of housing, shops and entertainment.
Although the move to Cambridge Manor was a big change, Elisabeth and Noel are enjoying their new life in University District. For Elisabeth, the best part about living in U/D isn’t just the amenities but the strong sense of community and helpful neighbours.
Says Elisabeth, “It’s a great sense of community, the people are really helpful, we have great neighbours and overall, it’s just a really great nice to be.”

Elisabeth also appreciates the little things that make life easier for older residents in University District, like the rapid snow removal from the sidewalks, ensuring safe and hassle-free excursions. For two individuals with limited mobility, this seemingly minor gesture makes a world of difference in their daily lives at U/D.
Originally from northern Ireland, Elisabeth and Noel moved to Calgary in 1977 and raised their family here. Now, their children and grandchildren enjoy visiting them and love that there’s always something for everyone in U/D. Whether it be Central Commons Park, the Cineplex VIP Cinemas, or a relaxing day at home, the three generations cherish spending quality time together in University District.
Elisabeth affectionately labels University District as a “one-stop destination.” She fully embraces the convenience of the retail stores within the community; particularly, the underground parking at the shops, which not only simplifies her shopping excursions but also spares her from braving the cold. Among the numerous attractions in University District, Village Ice Cream and Cobs Bread rank high on her list of favorites.
In her free time, Elisabeth is an avid reader with a broad taste in literature, from Louise Penny’s mysteries to captivating biographies. As arthritis affects her ability to handle books, she’s looking forward to utilizing the library at Cambridge Manor for its excellent selection of audiobooks, which will allow her to continue enjoying her favourite pastime.
