The Latest 2024 Design Trends: Q&A with Jayman BUILT's Expert Team

Are you dreaming of refreshing your home but feeling unsure where to find inspiration? We sat down with the award-winning design team at Jayman BUILT led by Bruce Harvey, Creative Director and Janice Robertson, Interior Design Manager to learn more about the latest design trends and tips to guide you in rejuvenating your space with style and elegance. Here’s what we discovered:

U/D: What design trends do you see becoming more popular this year?

Janice: We believe that quiet luxury – a look that is understated, but focuses on quality materials and workmanship helps create a calming, beautiful presence for our clients. We are seeing more white metals trending, and we love the way they easily interact with other finishes to layer in the drama. Contemporary European design is always on our radar when helping our clients at Magna at University District – as the clean lines, focus on natural materials and thoughtful finishes create a sense of renewal in our clients’ homes that enable them to feel inspired everyday. We always strive to design spaces that bring the outdoors in, and we know from research the immense impact this has on our mental health. Incorporating wet rooms into homes is a trending, luxurious way to indulge at the beginning and end of the day. We are continually looking for ways to renew our focus on wellness in the home and our home designs are rooted in an approach that prioritizes mental and physical health by ensuring natural light is abundant.

U/D: In your opinion, what design trends do you consider to be timeless?

Bruce: Any natural or nature-inspired products – natural wood, stone and marble is always considered timeless and classic. There are also beautiful quartz products that look just like marble, but without the maintenance and upkeep – which is important for many of our clients. As well, anything with clean lines will always stand the test of time, while quality, crafted pieces never go out of style.

U/D: When helping Jayman BUILT customers design their dream home, what do you always recommend they consider?

Bruce: We always recommend our clients consider five essential elements to begin. These elements form the foundation for their interior design aesthetic: kitchen cabinetry, countertop, backsplash, flooring and bathroom tile. Once these elements are selected, the remaining design details tend to come together more easily. We encourage our clients to bring us images and inspiration they love, as well as what they don’t love – so we can help them refine their style and ensure their home is a beautiful reflection of who they are.

U/D: How does Jayman BUILT make the custom design experience unique to buyers?

Janice: We have professionally certified interior designers that guide the customer through the entire selection process, at our onsite styleMagicTM Design Centre.  Clients are invited to come in for a whole day, and includes delicious lunch and snacks. They spend their day with a designer and we are proud of our immense selection of finishes, products and materials. Designer-guided tours are also offered every weekend, where customers are encouraged to come and preview all of the options available to them in advance of their selection day. With the help of our expert designers, anything our clients can dream of can become reality. From our in-showroom displays to the many product samples, the choices feel unlimited and provide our clients with the opportunity to truly tailor their home design to tell their story with style, functionality and authenticity.  

U/D: Do you have any guesses on what the next Pantone colour of the year might be?

Janice: It’s always a big surprise, but is often influenced by what’s going on in the world. For example, after the pandemic, the colour was a warm, neutral colour representing a feeling of comfort as people spent more time “nesting” at home.

U/D: How can people incorporate current trends on a variety of budgets?

Bruce: Online retailers often carry “versions of” pieces that follow the more expensive trends but at a more accessible price. We also find that many social media designers showcase many “how-to” videos on changing your look or decor for a variety of budgets. Home renovation pages are also a source for great ideas. Most manufacturers are ahead of this and will often look at trends and produce products at many different price points.

U/D: Where do Jayman BUILT designers find their inspiration for new designs and trends?

Bruce: My inspiration comes from travel, restaurants, trade shows and media!

Janice: Inspiration for me comes from everywhere – social media, media in general, travel, trade shows, fashion and by attending manufacturer and retailer launch events (basically what Bruce said)!
